Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) is an amateur radio-based system for real time digital communications of information of immediate value in the local area. Data can include object Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates, weather station telemetry, text messages, announcements, queries, and other telemetry. APRS data can be displayed on a map, which can show stations, objects, tracks of moving objects, weather stations, search and rescue data, and direction finding data.
APRS data is typically transmitted on a single shared frequency (depending on country) to be repeated locally by area relay stations (digipeaters) for widespread local consumption. In addition, all such data are typically ingested into the APRS Internet System (APRS-IS) via an Internet-connected receiver (IGate) and distributed globally for ubiquitous and immediate access. Data shared via radio or Internet are collected by all users and can be combined with external map data to build a shared live view.
APRS was developed from the late 1980s forward by Bob Bruninga, call sign WB4APR, a senior research engineer at the United States Naval Academy. He maintained the main APRS Web site until his death in 2022. The initialism “APRS” was derived from his call sign.

View Our Data at PWS Weather
AerisWeather owns and operates PWSweather – a community that provides personal weather station owners with a user-friendly dashboard to monitor, manage, and archive their data. Each contributor’s data is also made available in AerisWeather’s API via the PWSweather Contributor Plan. With access to historical, current, and forecast weather data along with map layers through the Contributor Plan, subscribers can power various applications – from smart home automation to personal weather websites. Finally, all members of the community can take advantage of a number of professional consumer applications which have a native PWSweather integration. Popular apps such as Rachio, Carrot Weather, and Orbit B-Hyve each have the ability for users to leverage their own personal weather data to power the respective app.
As part of our integration into the National Weather Service, KY6U WX weather site has been integrated into MesoWest. You can view our weather data on their site.
MesoWest is an ongoing cooperative project, started in 1996, to provide access to current and archive weather observations across the United States. Weather observations include but are not limited to temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation. Data are collected from a variety of organizations. Some stations participate in voluntary weather observing networks such as the Citizen Weather Observer Program. Others are part of mesonets that are managed by private firms or federal/state/local agencies. These data are available for a multitude of uses. Over 20,000 weather stations actively report to the MesoWest database.
KY6U WX is listed as station G2948 through the National Weather Service.
